Driveway Care

New asphalt needs time to harden and to fully cure, up to 12 months in some cases.  Your driveway may seem pliable until then, hardening and softening as temperatures rise and fall.

While your driveway is curing, it's best to exercise wisdom and caution in order to avoid potential problems.  We've listed a few simple guidelines below to help you keep your driveway long-lasting and looking good.

  • Keep heavy trucks off your new driveway.  If you must park a camper, RV or OTR truck on it, place a piece of plywood under the tongue and wheels to spread the weight.
  • Avoid spilling gas, oil, antifreeze, power steering fluid or other petroleum-based products on your driveway.  These types of chemicals will soften or damage the asphalt, affecting its durability and shortening the life of your driveway.
  • Be careful when using things like lawn chairs and kickstands on your driveway.  These things exert weight in concentrated areas and can create holes or depressions, especially when your driveway is new.
  • When parking on your asphalt driveway, be sure your tires are straight.  Parking  your car with the wheels turned has a tendency to leave divots in your driveway that are close to impossible to remove.
  • Edges are the weakest part of a driveway, due to the lack of support.  We suggest building up the sides with topsoil; this will add support to the edges and enhance the overall appearance of your driveway, especially after your grass has grown in.
